The province participated in a workshop on making non-detriment findings on species in Colombia

The undersecretary of Natural Resources, Alejandro Larriera, participated in Cartagena (Colombia), in an international workshop on making non-detriment findings on species (NDF).

The objective of the workshop was to assess the progress and results in the supervisory system (as a country) and in the issuance of the opinions.

In that sense, Larriera said, "The province presented its experience so that the rest of the participants could take it and adapt it. We have exhibited in the subject of monitoring for alligators’ population evaluations, as Colombia started two years ago, following the example of Santa Fe, a program like that one carried out in the province and Argentina.

"The workshop aimed to provide general guidelines for the realization of population censuses and the elaboration of the opinions to ensure the sustainability of the work."

The activity, organized by the Ministry of Environment of Colombia with the Alexander Von Humboldt Institute, was attended by specialists from Colombia, Spain, Mexico and Peru, together with representatives of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Making non-detriment findings of species (NDF) means giving scientific information that the parties must provide, and which in turn are monitored internationally.

CITES recognizes that international cooperation is essential for the protection of certain species of wild fauna and flora against their excessive exploitation through international trade and recognizes the urgency of taking appropriate measures to this end.
