The Ministry of Health of the Province of Santa Fe, through the Centro Único de Donación, Ablación e Implante de Órganos (Cudaio) reported that in the early hours of Monday morning an organ donation operation with special characteristics took place at the HECA.
This was the 400th donation at the Rosario hospital, which has been systematically dedicated to organ and tissue procurement since the 1980s.
According to Incucai's official records, as a result of this important number of processes, the HECA is currently the third largest hospital in the country in terms of historical numbers, behind the hospitals that centralise cases with donation potential in the provinces of Mendoza and Tucumán.
The director of Cudaio, Cecilia Andrada, emphasised that "this historic achievement covers the old Clemente Álvarez in Barrio Hospitales and the current one on Avenida Pellegrini. It is based especially on an internal procurement unit, led today by Dr. Eliana Londero and Dr. Emiliano Valtorta, and formed by professionals with a very high level of training and human commitment, working 24 hours a day every day of the year from the detection of potential donors, and then leading each process until each organ or tissue is delivered in its corresponding conservator to the person in charge of its transfer. This permanent action, invisible until the ablation and implantation are completed, is also supported by decisive health policies, on the part of the provincial Ministry by decision of the Minister of Health, Silvia Ciancio; of the Rosario Health Secretariat, of the workers of the Hospital".
1,075 transplants
In addition, Andrada pointed out that "the truly positive statistic is the 1075 transplants that were made possible by the 400 donations generated at the HECA. There were 1,075 patients from different parts of the country who received ablated organs in this hospital in the province of Santa Fe, including emergency cases, lives saved just in time, and many paediatric recipients.
The total number of transplants made possible by HECA donations includes 641 kidney, 247 liver, 95 heart, 56 renopancreatic, 21 lung, eight hepatorenal, three pancreatic, two cardiorenal, one intestinal and one cardiopulmonary transplant. In addition to these records, 668 corneal implants were performed.
In addition to the 400 organ procedures, the HECA also had 426 tissue donors in these four decades.
